What Is Documentary?
Documentaries are a type of film that encompass non-fiction in a way
that isn’t always focused on the creative analysis and meaning of the
film, but rather the exposition of the situation and the outcome results
of the film’s message. They are defined as using factual information to
tell a story, however these are separate from biopics, stories about
real life events or people, because many films of this nature exist yet
they are not documentaries. The main purpose of film is to tell a story,
however the mainstream market of film has reduced this down to it being
simply for entertainment, documentaries retain their presence on being
about information and the facts. They often explore a subject matter or a
person/people and use their findings to creatively elevate the audience
beyond the amount of knowledge that they started with.
Documentaries originated as a way to portray the modern development of society, to pry away from what Hollywood has created of the film industry. The early boom of Hollywood in the 1920s meant that the public eye saw filmmaking as only one thing, an art set forth on capturing the audiences attention in order to make money. Documentaries combatted this mentality by giving an opposite look at the perspective of filmmaking and giving filmmakers a new opportunity to tell stores the were lacking in the public eye or they felt needed to be heard.
Different variants of documentaries have always existed but only recently have they been labelled. The purpose of documentaries varies between each film however the general consensus is that they strive to inform the audience of a certain concept/topics et cetera. The different approaches taken often make the films experience a little unique. From having the documenters involved with the experience and the people involved, to a more distant arc in which the event has passed and the filmmakers are purely doing an analysis of the situation. These different tactics often lead to much different stories and the reaction to them vary slightly. The difficulty in achieving a key message in any documentary comes from the level of passion and involvement the filmmakers have with the story. If the story is something that is unheard of or forgotten, filmmakers will often have to use tactics such as dramatisation to create an extra layer of suspense, comparing them to fiction based films that achieve so well in Hollywood today. This keeps the audience intrigued as it reminds them of what they are used to but then is able to effectively get the message across once the audience is reminded the the events portrayed are real and active. Depending on the goal of the filmmakers each documentary can be wildly unique.
People feel that making documentaries is easier than making a ficitonal or more narrative driven film, however they don't realise that both are just as difficult are require just as much meticulous planning in order to strive for the most beneficial message and creative output. Documentaries allow for a different type of expression as they are a field in which documented facts can be presented in an entertaining and meaningful way, this allows people to listen to a cause and realise that some situations are either positively amazing and are in need of rejoicing or either are horribly powerful and are in need of change. Documentary is a powerful medium that many use in order to tell compelling stories.
